Preface

He is not a horse, he is Secretariat.

Secretariat, a legendary name in the world history of Thoroughbred horseracing………..

Secretariat (March 30, 1970 – October 4, 1989) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse that in 1973 became the first U.S. Triple Crown champion in 25 years.

He set race records in all three events in the Series – the Kentucky Derby (1:59 2/5), the Preakness Stakes (1:53), and the Belmont Stakes (2:24) – records that still stand today. He is considered to be one of the greatest Thoroughbreds of all time. In 1999, ESPN ranked Secretariat the 35th best athlete of the 20th century, the highest ranking racehorse on the list.

Nearly 42 years ago, Secretariat took the racing world by storm, winning the 1973 Triple Crown in dramatic fashion.

Today, interest in the horse forever known as “Big Red” continues to be strong.

I guess I must have a predestinated relationship with Secretariat.

I guess I must have a predestinated relationship with Secretariat. It all started from a book “Secretariat” by Raymond G. Woolfe Jr. By chance, I grabbed this last- stock -book which displayed on the bookshelf of a bookshop I visited in 2011. Since then I has become the fans of Secretariat. More importantly, Secretariat has become one of my main subjects in my horse paintings.

I couldn’t witness Secretariat races as I was only three years old in 1973. Fortunately, I could watch Secretariat’s great races through ‘You Tube’. I feel thankful to the development of information technology which has actually brought me to watch him and his races ‘live’ online. I enjoy watching every gait of him. I know that it is impossible to go back to the 70’s, therefore I pay a careful observation on each race of Secretariat posted on You Tube. Frequently, I repay over and over again all the videos of his races. Whenever Secretariat moved forward and overtook his rivals, my soul was ‘galloping’! Each time I watch him in action, I get to know him better and better.

In my eyes of an artist, Secretariat is the most perfect horse I have never seen before in terms of outward appearance and inward soul. In fact, I fell in ‘love’ with him at my first sight. I could feel my heart was flying high whenever I looked at Secretariat. I just could not tell why that moment.

What a co-incidence! No wonder I feel so close with him.

Later, I found that my birth year (1970) was exactly the same as the birth year of the greatest horse of the Century: Secretariat. Yet, my birth date (9 June) also fell on the most important and historical date for Secretariat as it was on this date that Secretariat won the celebrated Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes. What a co-incidence! No wonder I feel so close with him.

I have been watching Secretariat movie many times. I replay the video again and again. The movie actually has given me a deeper understanding about Secretariat and its super team, especially Penny Chenery, the owner of Secretariat.

Later, I connected with Leornard Lusky, the President of Secretariat.com. Established in 2002, Secretariat.com serves as Secretariat’s official Web site and chronicles the career of the racing legend known to his countless fans as “Big Red.”

Leornard Lusky, the world’s number one fans cum expert of Secretariat, expressed his admiration in my Secretariat paintings. And the team of Secretariat.com was impressed with my interest and affection for Secretariat. Very soon he suggested me to create a singular and comprehensive webpage of my Secretariat paintings for all the fans of Secretariat.

I feel honor and thankful for his suggestion.

This is how the ‘Secretariat & James’ column formed and created.

Through this particular column of Secretariat, I am dedicated to keep the champion’s legacy alive through the Secretariat paintings of mine. I am committed to bring a new dimension of Secretariat to the world.

Having the column also makes it possible for me to get connected and to keep in touch with the countless fans of Secretariat.

‘Secretariat & James’ cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds!

My dear fans of Secretariat over the world, are you ready?

The loyal fans of Secretariat,

James Phua
